Today is World Diabetes Day, so I decided this inaugural post would be the Sasquatche's life changing story.
Elsie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes one month before her 5th birthday. She has been heard to say that 4 is her favourite number because her life was less complicated when she was 4. She had been going to the bathroom quite a bit one weekend and then Monday morning she had an accident at preschool which was something that never happened. We thought it might be a bladder infection. We took a urine sample to the doctor and when she said there seems to be some sugar in her urine I secretly hoped it was because the little jam jar we had used for her urine sample hadn't been washed properly.
It wasn't the jam jar!
From the doctor's office we went to the lab for a blood test. Elsie wasn't too happy about a needle and my famous last word's "Hopefully this will be the last time for a very long time!" We just continued on with our evening as normal. I stayed up late to work on the preschool yearbook. At about 11pm the phone rang but I didn't recognize the number so I ignored it and went to bed. At 5:30 am my husband comes to say goodbye before leaving for work and says there is a message from the doctor at the lab and you need to call him ASAP.
I've never had sleep flee my body so quickly!
I actually waited until 7:30 to call the doctor. Two hours of repeating to myself the scripture:
"Be still and know that I am God."
By 12 noon on Tuesday May 1st, 2012 we were at Children's Hospital learning our new normal.
